Illusion of time

Stephen hawkings , A brief history of time , is indeed a wonderful book , and i guess a must read for every physics fan. It really does a great job in explaining the scientific theories about the universe, and about the concept of origin of time. It also raises questions about existence of God, and where the universe is heading too. I have jotted some of the interesting points from the book here.

“Each individual has his own personal measure of time, that depends where he is and how he is moving“

“From a pair of twins, if one is living on top of a mountain and other at sea level, the one at the height will grow old faster than the one at the bottom “

“The universe is growing constantly, with time and equally in all directions. The force of expansion is just higher than the gravitational force, else it would contract itself and  get shrunk ed  “”

“If an astronaut falls into a black hole , its mass will increase , but the energy equivalent of that mass will be returned to the universe in the form of radiation. In a sence the astronaut will be recycled . “

Work of precision

Found this in a temple, and the pundit was kind enough to allow me to click the picture.

This is a single carving done from a huge stone. I just feel amazed by the work of the artist. The shine and the glare on it looks as if its a metal, but its all stone. Its 100 years old, and should do any engineer proud.

8 – 8 – 8

After 100 years , today the date is 8 – 8 – 8 . Wats more , even the sum of all the digits , sums it to 8 . I guess something for the numerologists to cheer .

10 things about steve jobs, u probably didn’t know

The Steve job Stanford commencement speech is one of the most inspiring speeches for any one 2 hear. Its in fact a must read for any one who’s got lost about what he/she wants from life.

But people who’ve not read  about Steve jobs besides the Stanford speech , might find these points interesting.

1)The first product designed by Steve and woz together , was a blue box – a device with which you could make free calls all over the world, by actually duping the phone company.

2)It was his trip to India with his friend Kotte, when they traveled together barefoot wearing lungis, loincloth, sleeping in abandoned buildings, bargaining on buffalo milk, meditating in the Himalayas that actually made him more clear about what he wanted to do in life.

3) In spite of having an unmarried mother and being adopted himself, he refused to believe Chris-Ann , that he was the father of their child.  He even refused to give any settlement. Later the same story repeated with Laurene, when she became pregnant, thou finally he did marry her.

4)When he became a millionaire, he denied stock options to many of his peers, who had founded the company with him. Out of generosity, and fairness, it was Woz, who actually gave away 1/3rd of his stocks to friends and other co founders who had helped the company. He called it the WozPLan

5)Employees in apple were always scared of meeting Steve in the corridor, or in the company lift, as he asked questions like “When did you loose your virginity” , “When was the last time, you drank acid”, “Why should apple be paying you , what they are paying you”. If the answer was not up to his mark, the employee was kicked out.

6)He was the venture capitalist for pixar.  In the board meetings , with the co founders of pixar, Steve loved 2 dominate and own the whiteboard. Once when Alvy (co founder) thought Steve was wrong, he got up and made corrections on the white board. For doing this , he almost ended up with a bloody nose and finally after working for 15 years at pixar, his company , he resigned, saying that he cant have a life where Steve job is part of it.

7)IBM wanted to sign a contract with him and sent him a 100 page document, which he picked and dropped in the trash can.  He said bluntly,” come up with a contract i like, sweet, simple and easy to read, with not more than 5 pages.

8)After Steve jobs was kicked out of apple and after his storming comeback with next and  pixar, it was Gil, the CEO of apple who proposed a come back for Steve at apple. He convinced the board of directors, to get him on board. Once he was, within 6 months he actually started a revolt against Gil and kicked him out and became the CEO

9)His primary diet was of fruits. He would have bath once in 10-14 days, and would claim, that his sweat doesnt stink, coz his diet is only of fruits. This was only his opinion thou, anyone who wanted to chat with him, would take him outside , in the open and chat, claiming that he would smell like hell .

It took him actually 15 years to become humble and more human, and that’s when he admitted that working at apple is like a team sport.

10)The song “Imagine” sung by John Lennon who was killed really close to the apple IPO day, in 1980 was one of his all time favorites.  “You may say I am a dreamer, But I am not the only one”.
